"This course introduces students to information and communication technology in a business environment and builds a foundation of digital literacy skills necessary for success in a technologically driven society. Students will develop word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design skills. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on digital literacy, effective electronic research and communication skills, and current issues related to the impact of information and communication technology."

Unit Descriptions

Unit 1: Getting Started & Google Drive

This beginning unit starts with a look at the cloud computing with Google Apps Education (GAE). All student work will be saved in GAE. You will also learn basic computer terminology, become familiar with operating systems, and identify common user interface elements. The second half of the unit will explore Google Docs and its uses for creating effective business documents. You will learn techniques for creating and using folders with in the Cloud . You will also be able to save, share, publish as a webpage, rename files, move, copy, select and delete files. You will also learn how to share your personal GAE folder with the teacher and creating an electronic portfolio.

 

Unit 2: Computer Graphics - Google Draw

This unit will help students learn how to create and manipulate simple graphics using Google Draw. Students will also edit digital images and create business logos.

 

Unit 3: Spreadsheets

Students will learn how to use spreadsheets using Google Sheets. Spreadsheet projects will include invoices, payroll and statistical analysis.

 

Unit 4: Presentations

 

Students will learn how to use spreadsheets using Google Slides to make effective professional presentations. Students will be required to research and present using Google Slides in front of the class..

 

Unit 5: Databases & Computer Terms: 
This unit focuses databases where students will creating databases, edit/search/delete data and generate reports. Students will also learn how to migrate database data to other applications such as spreadsheets. 
 
Unit 6: Publishing & Flowcharts

Unit two also introduces you to desktop publishing with Lucidpress (a GAE app), using built-in templates and designing your own, original, publications. You will learn about fonts and styles, design, inserting graphics, and creating documents such as home business cards and flyers.  

 

Students will also learn how to make flowcharts and mindmaps using Lucid Chart  (a GAE app).

 

The unit culminates with a project about designing a poster and a newsletter. 

 
Unit 4: Programming
Students will learn to create simple program and write code to create video games. Students will learn about variables, loops, condional statements and graphics. S
 
Unit 5: The Web

This unit focuses on the Internet as a tool extending the functionality of your home computer. You will discover the differences between good websites and bad ones, and then learn how to effectively create your own. The Internet is a tool with many flaws: in the second half of this unit, you will learn about some of the many. You will explore several ways of protecting your privacy and avoiding  potential dangers of web such as spyware and viruses  and cyber-bullying.

 
You will explore how to make an effective personal effect digital footprint.
 
You will create a web site that incorporated online video and podcasts which you create.
 
 
Unit 6: Culminating Activity

This unit is the culminating challenge for applying knowledge and skills in ways that display your creativity and reflection on the course material. You will create a brief survey on an ethical issue related to information and communication technology. The next five activities will allow you to tabulate the results, process the data, and then present the information in a meaningful way through web design and presentation software. This unit will give you a chance to express your creativity while demonstrating the mastery of course expectations.
